Retired Papua New Guinea Captain calls for Air Niugini to be Privatized
According to Post Courier, Air Niugini’s retired Boeing Captain Paun Nongor-r has called on to the government of Papua New Guinea to privatize Air Niugini.
“If the government wants Air Niugini to perform, it has to be privatized now,” said Nongor-r.
Known to be Air Niugini’s longest serving pilot, Nongo-r said in his 45 years of flying with Air Niugini, he has always followed the standards that was taught by the Australians.
He said this has kept him and the millions of passengers he has carried on aboard safely to their destinations.
Nongo-r said every other government owned institution in this country has failed in terms of standards.
“Air Niugini has been a government owned entity for a long time and it’s never been profitable since I’ve been there.
“Airplane kills people so they (government) can’t run stuff like that, we don’t want safety to be jeopardized,” said Nongor-r.
He said that if you run an airline , you have to put the money into it to run it safely and not to make a profit, safety has to come first no matter what.
He said an airline business is not a profitable one and he has been in the position to know enough.
Nongor-r first joined Air Niugini in 1985 and has been flying the big Boeing 767, Airbus 310 and Airbus 300 jets on international routes until his retirement last month.
