Electoral Commission confirms New Ireland by-election result, declaring the governorship issue legally resolved.
New Ireland Governorship Dispute: Electoral Commission Declares Matter Settled
The political dispute over the New Ireland governorship may be nearing its conclusion after Acting Electoral Commissioner Margaret Vagi announced that the law already determines the outcome.
According to the Organic Law on Provincial Governments and Local Level Governments, the winner of the by-election automatically becomes governor.
The Electoral Commission confirmed that Byron Chan is the declared winner, and the writ has been formally returned to Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae at Government House, Port Moresby.
While the Commission considers the issue settled, political observers in New Ireland Province say public and political reactions may continue.
Acting Electoral Commissioner Margaret Vagi has made it crystal clear:
“No more legal advice needed.”
According to her, the Organic Law on Provincial Governments and Local Level Governments (OLGPLLG) already settles the issue.
Section 17 says the winner of the by-election becomes Governor.
That winner? Byron Chan.
The writ has now been officially returned to Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae at Government House in Port Moresby.
Translation? The Electoral Commission believes the matter is DONE.
No more debates.
No more legal opinions.
The law has spoken.
But in PNG politics… is anything ever really that simple?
New Ireland is watching.
The country is watching.
