THIRTY-NINE suspects are in police custody in West New Britain following several raids in the Talasea district.

Of the 39 suspects, nine were arrested for rapes that occurred in Kimbe and 14 were arrested for a armed robbery that was done with the suspects taking a video of the holdup.

Police Commander Chief Inspector Fred Kaiwa said the arrests were made possible following a new policing concept being implemented in the province.

“The concept is a way forward planning concept initiated to man-age law-and-order issues in each respective districts and the province as a whole, involving Quarterly Special Police operations targeting respective districts with the culmination of each monthly and quarterly crime statistics as database information.

The police operations will target communities affected by crime and will also create a good community oriented policing strategy in terms of police visibility and presence, PPC Kaiwa said.

It will restore public confidence in each community within each district of WNB.”

The 14 youths were caught by police as they moved into the Valupai plantation, allegedly about to attack a nearby village in Talasea District. Deputy Commissioner of Police (regional operations) Samson Kua confirmed the arrest of the 14 saying that: “Police are moving and they are getting information that has put them at the right spot to arrest and handle criminals who want to attack innocent people.

You cannot continue your life of crime. Criminal activities will only see you being apprehended, shot and injured or shot and killed,” DCP Kua said,

The 14 were found with 12 firearms, with four of the 12 being fac-tory made.

Surprised at the response of the police, they did not dare to engage with the police in a shootout.

Instead they quietly laid down and handed over the firearms and ammunition and surrendered.
