True Inspiring Stories of Success – Scott Sause, Papua New Guinea.

When I was young, my family moved back and forth between my home of Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. It allowed me to gain a unique viewpoint on life, as I got to see the world from two different perspectives. While growing up between these countries I was inspired by a lot of successful bankers, entrepreneurs, and leaders in business who were able to create opportunities for others and help their communities thrive. This is what inspired me to complete a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Auckland (New Zealand), with a double major in Operations & Supply Chain Management and Market Research. I remember moving to New Zealand in High School being bittersweet. The sinking feeling of leaving my family, friends, and life as I knew it behind quickly became overshadowed by the excitement of new opportunities and the joy of new possibilities. It wasn’t easy moving to a new country, feeling isolated and having no connections or friends, but the single biggest driver to succeed for me was recognizing that I was blessed with an opportunity that many of my fellow countrymen, cousins, and friends back home didn’t have. This driver continues to keep me grounded and continues to push me to be the best and never make excuses. What I also didn’t realize growing up was that the chinks in my armor would soon become some of my greatest assets. In hindsight leaving my life back home and moving to a place of uncertainty where so many things were foreign to what I knew at the time – is what enabled me to develop the ability to build relationships, be self-assured and be confident, which are all key qualities of a successful banker. Over time I managed to achieve success by the grace of God, the support of my parents, a relentless drive to do my family and country proud by making the most of every opportunity that came my way, and lastly the key qualities that defined my character, which was developed through my struggle and witnessing the struggle of my people. To cut a long story short I ended up finishing High School before graduating from New Zealand’s University of Auckland with that Bachelor of Commerce degree and in the process, I got awarded the New Zealand Prime Minister’s Scholarship which saw me live and work in Vietnam. The purpose of this scholarship was to strengthen New Zealand’s ability to engage with key Asian trading partners and learn more about the Asian Market. Today I am a Graduate at ANZ Bank where I am preparing to step into a promoted role as an Analyst overseeing the strategic execution of key investment portfolios. I wanted to share my story to encourage you all to focus on developing your character and working on those chinks in your armor. Through life, there’s a lot to gain and a lot to lose, but one thing I know to be true is that character is something that stays with you no matter where you go. I want to also encourage you all to figure out what drives or motivates you to be successful (whether that be God, family, or a goal) and use it as fuel to keep working hard. Be determined and stay consistent in the pursuit of your goals. Just because something is hard, doesn’t mean it’s impossible to achieve – remember the tougher the climb, the better the view.
