Attack of President Trump is an Attack on Democracy
By: Peter O’Neil, Former Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea.
On behalf of my family and our people of Papua New Guinea, I offer my thoughts and prayers to
former President of the United States, Donald Trump as he recovers from a shooting incident over the weekend.
There can be no place for violence of this nature in any democracy.
President Trump was very supportive of strengthening America’s bilateral relationship with PNG.
During his tenure as President, we enhanced security arrangements and built stronger ties with American investors.
The USA under President Trump’s leadership was also a signatory to and major driver of the US$1.6 billion PNG Electrification Partnership signed at the 2018 APEC meeting.
In my discussions with him, I found President Trump to be a direct person with a clear understanding of business and the economy.
Papua New Guinea will always work with the elected Governments of all our foreign partners, and we have a particular interest in seeing democracy triumph and I hope there is no further repeat of such violence as the United States goes to the polls later this year.
I wish President Trump a speedy recovery.
