As the medical experts around the globe are actively looking for the cure of coronavirus, Microsoft founder, Bill Gates does not want to miss out helping the world by announcing that his foundation will donate a huge amount to the coronavirus relief efforts.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation previously reported that it would spend USD 10 million, but significantly upped the figure recently. The foundation will be giving a total of USD 100 million in funding the prevention measures and treatment of patients for the outbreak.

The fund from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was said to be used for vaccine research to help find the vaccine for the virus, limit its spread and improve detection.

“The funding will help strengthen detection, isolation and treatment efforts; protect at-risk populations; and develop vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics. The new funding is inclusive of $10 million the foundation committed to the outbreak in late January,” said the foundation in a press release.

Breaking down the total fund, this is how it will be used:

USD 60 million will be distributed to public and private groups including public-health institutions and biotech companies to fund diagnostics, treatments, and vaccines.

USD 20 million is going to technical assistance for front line responders (healthcare providers in affected areas) and will be split among the World Health Organization (WHO) and several public-health authorities in China, including China’s National Health Commission and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

USD 20 million is for the development of prevention systems in countries with at-risk populations specifically Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

Most of the money will be distributed to organizations that already work closely with the Gates Foundation such as WHO and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) that focus on developing new vaccines to prevent and contain disease epidemics.

The Foundation also mentioned in its press release that the money going to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, specifically, is for technical support to implement the screening and treatment of suspected cases, laboratory confirmation of 2019-nCoV diagnoses, and the safe isolation and care of identified cases.

Hopefully, Gates’ fund will help step up the game to find the best solution for coronavirus very soon.
