Grand Chief Sir Michael T Somare passes on at midnight 12am 26 February 2021 at Pacific International Hospital after battling with pancreatic Cancer.
Sir Michael Thomas Somare GCL GCMG CH CF SSI KSG PC was a Papua New Guinean politician. He was a pivotal politician in the coming of independence. His political career spanned from 1968 until his retirement in 2017. He has been the longest-serving prime minister.
It is with great sadness that the family of Papua New Guinea’s founding father Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare family have announced early tonight the passing of their late father, grandad and great grandad Sir Michael.
Elder daughter Betha Somare officially released a statement few hours ago confirming her dad’s passing.
Indeed a very sad day for Papua New Guinea to finally bid farewell to the man who stood tall to gain self-government in 1975.
So long Grand Chief, Rest Well.
