PM Marape on benefits of US investments in Papua New Guinea

Prime Minister Marape recently talked about why it’s a great idea for American businesses to invest in Papua New Guinea. He mentioned that there are plenty of opportunities for growth and development in our country.

PRIME Minister James Marape has raised with new United States (US) Ambassador to Papua New Guinea Ann Marie Yastishock why American businesses need to invest in PNG’s downstream processing industry.

“For PNG-US relations, Papua New Guinea has a huge youth population with school leavers seeking further studies and employment opportunities, which needs to be addressed in the next five to seven years,” he said.

“That is why we are in the conversation on downstream processing. If we can get US investors into downstream processing in agriculture, fisheries, and forestry, this could help create employment opportunities for our citizens.”

He also discussed with Yastishock the need to implement the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) between Port Moresby and Washington.

Marape said the US had stepped up its interactions with the Pacific in recent years, such as the two US-Pacific Island countries meetings in Washington.

He also told Yastishock of the need to award scholarships to Papua New Guinea students to study in the United States.

“If we could further expand on this scholarship for our Papua New Guinea students, it would do a great deal in alleviating some of the unemployment and training needs of our young citizens coming out of our school system,” he said.

He said there were limited spaces for young people in higher education institutions, and limited job opportunities for graduates.

“So it would be great if the US can help facilitate scholarships for PNG students in the US,” Marape said.

He added that last year, the top performing students from PNG’s National Schools of Excellence were offered scholarships in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in US universities.

He also raised reciprocal visa-on-arrival arrangements for both PNG and US citizens.

Yastishock said the US government was keen on progressing the issues Marape raised and proposed a meeting between officials of both countries later this year in Port Moresby.
