Prime Minister James Marape has urged public servants to take PNG back from themselves.
Mr Marape said for the past 44 years PNG has allowed opportunities for economic prosperity and society happiness squandered by our own complacency and corruption.
“To take back PNG, we must take back our mind from greed and bribery and corruption and do the simple things right like respect for time and each other including females in our society,” Mr Marape said.
“To change PNG it must start with us who are getting paid by public money.”
He said the 3 per cent of Papua New Guineans who work in the Public Service, including the judiciary and parliament, had consumed more than 50 per cent of the country’s budget in salaries and recurrent expenditures.
“We are starting from the PM’s office have been misleading PNG and sadly our performance to date has been found wanting,” he said.
He said that the nation forgave their wrongdoings on Monday during the ‘Repentance Day’ and he had on the other hand prayed for both curse and blessing.
“Curse to those who want to engage in gross negligence, complacency, bribery and corruption,” he said.
“Blessings for those who from this day on want to improve for the better of our motherland PNG.”
Mr Marape said: We can never take back the past but the future is ahead for the betterment.
“We can only take back PNG and make it the richest black nation where no child is left behind if we get our minds correct and it starts with me as PM and all the executive arm of government.
