We Must Protect Papua New Guinea From People Who Pretend to be Interested in the Greater Good of Our Country
By Governor Allan Bird | PNG Political Limelights | 15 Feb. 2022.
When I joined National Alliance (NA) Party in January 2017, I wanted to help build an entity that would gain the trust of our people. I wanted our Party to do the right thing for our people and our country. I remain committed to that ideal.
We must all be conscious of what we can do for our people and our country. We can't be thinking of how to enrich ourselves and be cooking up contracts and other things we can scam from.
Unfortunately Papua New Guinea is where it is now because many individuals have taken advantage of the good desires of some of our leaders.
When National Alliance (NA) was at the height of its power, many individuals benefitted handsomely from the public purse. And this created lots of anger in the community.
We cannot deny that. When you listen to everyone involved in throwing Grand Chief (GC) Somare out of office illegally, they all say the same thing, it was to stop the the feeding frenzy.
When People's National Congress (PNC) came into power, the same thing happened. More people began to feed on the public purse. The feeding didn't stop, it got worse.
Now PANGU is in charge, guess what, there are people feeding again. Our country is always the victim of people with their own self interest.
So whether NA is in charge, PNC is in charge or PANGU is in charge, the same people simply migrate from one government to the next and continue sucking the life out of our country.
I know because I became Governor of a province where NA was in charge of, in 2017, we had no money in our accounts. It was cleaned out by people who claimed to be loyal to NA. Yet in actual fact, they took advantage of the goodness of a great and loving man, our founding father GC Somare.
There are several of them who have taken out court cases against East Sepik Provincial Government (ESPG) and won and for which we still have to pay. We settled many already but there are still more to pay.
So the Sepik people still have to pay for bad deals done during a time when my party was in charge. It is a sad and shameful legacy that we must shed.
In National Aliance we have to be different this time, we have to be ever watchful and diligent that the same people who ate the heart out of this Party are not allowed to do so again.
That is our responsibility as NA to identify those who would drag us and our country down and make sure they don't do it again.
We must protect our country especially from people who pretend to be interested in the greater good of our country but in actual fact, are simply interested in bleeding our country.
Let's build NA to do good and greater things. We can't be another entity that sucks the life out of our country and robs our children of a fair and equitable future.
NA cannot be a party that benefits the same privileged people again and again. We must be a party that gives opportunities to even the least citizens in Papua New Guinea.
We must excercise greater caution and wisdom in the decisions we make as a party. So we add do the country, not take away from it.
This is my call to National Aliance Party faithful around the country. Indeed it is a call to all political parties and their followers. Let's put our people and our country first in 2022.
